Somewhere in America is a guy named Evan. In Austin Carlile’s phone he’s down as Evan Help because about six months ago, he contacted the Of Mice & Men frontman on Twitter at his lowest point - beaten by his father and kicked out of home, he had no one else to turn to. Austin responded and gave Evan his phone number just so he had someone to talk to; over the next few weeks Austin helped find Evan a job and get back on his feet.
“I even helped him get health insurance, and I don’t even have health insurance. He texted me the other day to say he got a raise and… and he’s so proud.” Sitting in the back lounge of his band’s bus in California, Austin’s voice is cracking. “That shit right there is why I do it. I don’t give a fuck what anybody out there says about me, because it makes my day when Evan Help pops up on my phone. That’s why I want to exist.
